Does Working Out Improve Posture?

Improving posture is not an easy task hence why a majority of patients see chiropractors to help decrease unwanted curvature throughout the spine. Usually when a spinal joint has been restricted in a position for a prolonged period of time it can cause the body to automate it’s function and create change to the region affected. This change can cause pain, limited movement and postural distortions. Unfortunately it is not as easy to fix as joining a gym and pumping some weights and in this blog we will explain why and how we can make these changes for the better!

Why Doesn’t Exercise Change Posture?

Have you ever seen a hunchback at the gym? Look around, guaranteed there will be a beefed up individual with a slump like posture and this can be due to the fact of spinal joint restrictions throughout the spine. Yes, working the muscles strengthens the surrounding area although muscles are only one part of the problem! Majority of the patients that come in have very little drive to start gym routines and lift weights and hence why chiropractic care can be beneficial with prescribed therapies and recommendations to make change!

How Can We Make Changes To Posture?

The biggest way of making change is to locate the restricted joints in the spine and either seeking professional help to mobilise the area or you can part take in stretching and mobility training such as yoga and Pilates.

How Can Chiropractors Help With Posture?

A chiropractor can help with posture by using adjustments in specific joints to help remobilise them almost instantly. With the help of spinal adjustments and mobility exercises, posture is able to improve as a whole. To figure out how bad posture is both a posture scan and X-Ray will be taken if necessary to see how bad the degeneration is aswell as any other anomalies unseen from the naked eye.

If you are someone that is suffering from a hunch back or other postural deficit, reach out to one of our chiropractic specialists at The Melbourne Chiropractor and lets help correct and stabilize your spine again!

Should I Stretch Or Exercise When In Pain?

Stretching and exercising is a great way to get the body moving again although when in pain it can cause some unwanted aches and pains!

There is no right or wrong when it comes to mobilising joints when they are stiff but when an acute condition arises rest is usually best!

Stretching when in pain can actually hinder recovery and strain the muscles associated with the issue at hand! The goal when stretching is to help prevent things from getting tight to begin with although when there is a muscle strain pulling it into lengthened positions can damage the muscle.

Exercise on the otherhand can be great when done for mobility only during acute pain. Usually walking or swimming can help mobilise areas of concern given muscles the ability to function without them getting weak and tight throughout the recovery process. Exercise in strenuous matters should be limited as compressive forces or jolting exercises can cause damage to the area of concern.

If you are currently struggling to move and and unable to walk it is probably best to see a professional before engaging in any physical types of activity especially if you are immobile.

The goal with both exercise and stretching when in pain is to comfortably move areas that are in pain without causing more discomfort. There are many variations and exercises to do depending on the condition and this can be tailored into a rehab plan when you see one of our healthcare professionals.

If you are currently suffering from any aches or pains our team of chiropractors and Remedial Massage Therapists are experienced in musculoskeletal injuries and have the ability to point you in the right direction with exercise and stretching activities!

Top 3 Ground Sports For Summer 2023!

Some of us love to go sightseeing and do things that require little to no equipment! Our bodies are designed to exert energy and power without needing assistance from a secondary source. Unlike water sport activities we don’t need to be weary of the dangers of going to deep or far past our comfort zones, although watching out for inclines and hidden potholes can be quite the problem!

Summer doesn’t have to be spent in the water it just has to be enjoyable for you! Water phobia is a real thing but even if you don’t suffer from it here are some fantastic ways to engage in some form of exercise over the Summer of 2023!

1- Walking/Running – This is the best way to exert energy and build up your stamina over a period of time by creating a training protocol. You don’t have to be a strong runner or even fit to get yourself started. Training in simple intervals such as, running 5 minutes and walking 5 minutes and repeating is a great way to get started!

2- Tennis – The Australian Open is around the corner and let’s be honest this a fantastic way to get you out and about for a social game with some friends! No matter the skill set tennis is a sport that can be played by all ages. If you are worried about not being as good as  you first thought, get yourself a coach and maybe join the local club to get yourself going for this Summer 2023!

3- Bike Riding/Hiking – Both are great, one requires the use of equipment the other does not, but the great thing about it all is that it gets you up and moving. The great thing about hiking this summer is having the ability to travel to new places and see new things. It doesnt have to be a wild goose chase, it just has to be something that is comfortable for you! Bike Riding on the other hand is a less strenuous exercise as it requires less pressure onto the joints although is still a fantastic way to mobilise the hips!

Remember when engaging in any type of sport to keep yourself hydrated and slip slop slap over this summer! Sunscreen does more than just protect us from getting burnt, it can save our lives!

If you are currently experiencing any strains, sprains or back pains and are looking to put a stop to it, our team at The Melbourne Chiropractor at ready to get you sorted over this summer period!

Call us on 9302 1023 or book online today to schedule in an appointment with a chiropractor or remedial massage therapist at one of our 3 clinics!

Gym is know by everyone as a place of fitness but what type of fitness works best for your posture?

In this blog we will explain the top 4 gym exercises which you should be doing today to help improve your posture and strengthen your back!

What Type Of Exercise Is Best For Posture?

Any type of movement is great if you want to relieve tension although not just any type of exercises will help improve your posture. There is a fine line between what works and what doesn’t help at all! Our top 4 exercises involve strength and hypertrophy training to achieve postural results over a 6 month period!

What Are The Top 4 Gym Exercises For Posture?

Deadlifts

– Lat Pulldowns or Pullups

– Seated or Standing Rows

– Rear Deltoid Flys

How Should I Best Implement These Exercises Into My Program?

The best way to start an exercise program is to consult a personal trainer to help out with your form. The main goal behind working out is to get the most out of an exercise without overdoing it! If you are someone with lifting experience it is always best to begin with a compound lift such as a deadlift before working on supplementary lifts such as your Lat pull downs.

Will Strength Exercises Really Help My Posture?

Most of the time postural change is due to stress and incorrect posture either at a desk or job site.

By working out muscles that have overcompensated due to this it is very likely that by strengthening and building the area up that it will help correct posture!

How Does Chiropractic Care Help?

Chiropractic care is known as one of the “postural fixes” when it comes to functional issues. 9 times out of 10 function is what causes unlevelled and swayed like postures.

The goal of Chiropractic care is to eliminate tension within spinal segments and decrease muscular tightness to free up areas of concern!

If you are someone that is currently suffering from a postural complaint and are looking for help give our clinic a call on 9302 1023 or book in your first appointment with us to see how we can get you back on track!

Why Should We Exercise?

Exercise is a physical activity which causes us to expend energy. In doing so it helps create function and mobility depending on the type of exercise that is being participated in. The idea around exercise is to enhance the body’s functional and physical abilities. Whether it is cardiovascular health, mobility, endurance or just trying to look better.

What Is Our Team’s Approach To Exercise?

Exercise is a fundamental building block to engage and strengthen areas of weakness throughout the musculoskeletal system. Our goal as chiropractors is to use exercises that are generalised to begin with and then work on weaknesses individually according to the persons preferences. Not one exercise is guaranteed to have an optimal outcome in every individual hence why a variety of different stretches and strengthening activities are implemented throughout ones care plan.

What Are Signs Exercise Is Negatively Impacting You?

What Should You Do After Seeing A Chiropractor

Chiropractors are experienced allied health professionals who use a variety of techniques known as adjustments. The main goal for a chiropractor is to help alleviate symptoms and enhance bodily function of patients to improve their overall health. Most people seek Chiropractic care to prioritise their health and wellbeing.

What Should You Do After A Chiropractic Appointment?

1. Increase Water Intake

Drinking plenty of water 24 hours after your appointment is a great way to stay hydrated and flush out any toxins within the system. Water is also a great wat of helping your bodies muscles and joints to relax!

2. Walking!

Walking is a great tool to help the body limber up after a session. Using the new and improved mobility helps you to maintain the benefits for longer. As they say “use it or lose it!”.

3. Relax!

Relaxing after your appointment is beneficial to ensure your mind and body remain relaxed and destressed.

Things To Avoid After A Chiropractic Appointment!

1. Heavy Lifting

Chiropractic Care mobilises joints meaning that compression type exercise can once again compress the joints. Usually after adjustments that can lead to pain and increased stress overall to the bodies musculoskeletal system.

2. Tummy Sleeping

Sleeping on your stomach adds unneeded pressure and strain on the joints throughout the spine and creates muscle tension throughout. This is because the body is not set in a neutral position such as on your back or side and can cause problems such as neck and back pain.

3. Over-Working

Over working is always something difficult to avoid especially if it is the nature of the job. It is always recommended that prolonged sitting be avoided as it tends to aggravate areas such as the neck and lower back. Heavy lifting at job sites and wearing heavy tool bags for long periods can also cause ongoing issues and affect the recovery of your condition or complaint at hand.

* If you are someone who is suffering from Headaches, Neck Pain or Low Back Pain due to your working environment book and appointment today or give our team a call today on 9376 2002 at The Melbourne Chiropractor to find out how we can help you out today!

What Are The Benefits Of Limiting Sugar Intake?

Inflammation is something we usually see in our joints and is something that we all like to avoid! Unfortunately sugar is something that fires up our bodies inflammatory system in various ways. We all want to be functioning as best as we can so it is ideal to restrict your sugar intake. It is common to have a sugar craving for sweets and there can be healthier substitutes that allow for better energy and overall performance when it comes to bodily functions.

These snacks can include things such as fruit or nuts which are a great way to avoid ramping up your sugar intake and avoiding those high GI foods that cause us to crash. There are also other types of foods such as yogurts and nuts which are also great snacking foods but beware as they are also high in calories and should be limited.

Exercise is also a great way to decrease sugar cravings as the body tends to crave healthier foods to refuel and rebuild.

By substituting or limiting sugar in your diet the following benefits can be seen in various research articles:

  • Increased Energy
  • Increased Mood
  • Healthier Looking Skin
  • Better Gut Health
  • Better Oral Hygiene
  • Decreases Depression/Anxiety
  • Decreased Likelihood of Diabetes
